We’re all only human and it’s hardly surprising that sometimes an emotion can get hold of us with such ferocity, we fear we’ll never recover. Well, it’s a strategy that forms the foundation of mindfulness and is one of the most useful things to spring from that tradition. It allows you to stand one remove away from what’s going on inside your mind and body and to release yourself from the hold your own feelings have on you. It helps you to see that feelings and thoughts are feelings and thoughts – they are not the sum and total substance of your existence. Becoming the observer allows you to get clarity – by taking that step back, you’re able to get a better sense of which thoughts are helpful and which are just illogical, emotion-driven ego-noise.

What Does it Mean

To put the idea into practice, remember that it’s a completely different thing to just thinking about yourself. No one would suggest that to become consumed by self-obsessed thinking was healthy. Observing yourself from a slight distance is entirely different. It can begin with a good breathing exercise, eyes closed, and then move into a calm ten minutes in which you allow thoughts to come and ago across your mind while resisting the urge to jump into one of them and make it bigger. Don’t judge the thought but don’t enter it either. Before long, you’ll have the hang of it. Just do an internet search on ‘becoming the observer’ and you’ll find it offers emotional and psychological riches just waiting to be enjoyed.
