Stroke. It’s one of those afflictions which we pray, along with cancer, will somehow avoid us and land on someone else. We may feel guilty for that thought, but it’s just a sign we’re human. Who, after all, wants this prevalent health hazard, which can leave people speechless and without full motion? It’s a horrific ailment that can leave a person fully capable mentally but trapped in an unwilling, near-motionless body. Fortunately, being able to spot the signs and get help early can make a difference. There are ways you can diminish the damage of a stroke and even prevent it altogether. Here are some steps to take which, along with gay massage, can keep you safe and sound.

The early signs

Strokes are caused by bleeding or clots in the brain. They cause life-changing, long-term disability and around a quarter of sufferers are under 65. They come in a wide variety of severity levels, from small changes seen on brain scans right the way through to total loss of speech and no movement down one side of your body (including the face). 20 per cent of strokes are fatal. So remember the test (you may have seen it in TV adverts). Can you smile? Is your face lopsided? Can you raise your arms and keep them raised? Is your speech difficult to understand and slurry? If you’ve got any of these symptoms, even if you think only mildly, it’s time to call the emergency services. There are other early signs, too. Is there a sudden numb or weak feeling down one side of your body, loss of vision (or blurry vision), inexplicable sense of confusion, profound headache?

2. Your pulse

Irregular heart rate means greater risk of stroke. When the heart experiences an irregular rhythm, it dispenses small bits of matter which can reach the brain. Blood-thinners can help. The best way to know if this problem applies to you is to check your pulse. Listen to the beat. Many of us get the occasional irregularity but if you’re getting consistently irregular rhythms, it’s time to see your GP.

3. Blood pressure

High blood pressure is a stroke risk factor, no ifs, ands or buts. Have yours blood pressure checked regularly.

4. Smoking

The more cigarettes you go through, the greater your chances of stroke. Cut down and, if you quit completely and you’ll undo the damage in five years.

5. Cholesterol

Clogged-up arteries can be caused by high cholesterol levels and the end result is a great likelihood of stroke. A test can help you find out if this applies to you. You can then do a number of things, from dietary changes to increasing the amount of exercise you take, to bring your levels down.

6. Mini-strokes

Mini-strokes afflict the body with the same symptoms (e.g. slurred speech) as major strokes, but they then clear in about 24 hours, leaving you symptom-free. Don’t ignore them because they mean you’ve got a greater likelihood of major stroke.
