Brexit

So the votes have been counted and the results are in: 52 per cent of those who chose to exercise their vote want the UK to leave the EU. It’s fair to say that there are shockwaves vibrating throughout the breadth and length of the country. The polls prior to last Wednesday indicated that it was going to be a close-run contest, with each side edging above the other and then vice versa. Now, in the aftermath, the results are being interpreted to show various demographical divides – old/young, right-wing/left-wing, north-south and so on. Of course, none of these interpretations shows the complete truth of the situation which, as always, is more complicated than the media like to make out.

Brexit and Gay Massage

Some say that the results demonstrate that the more disenfranchised members of society – particularly the working classes – wanted to lash out an establishment they perceived as being completely out of touch with their lives. But would the disaffected poor really ally themselves to old Etonian Boris Johnson? Elsewhere, the left-wing press is reeling from what it sees as the scourge of xenophobia sweeping the nation. The right-wing press counters that it’s entirely possible to be pro-Europe but anti-EU and that to characterise them as foreigner-hating racists is unfair. Remainers, meanwhile, are characterised as being part of a metropolitan, liberal elite who are simply getting in a strop now that the prosperity of their Polish au pairs is under threat. All of this is so much newspaper blather. Deeper truths will emerge with time as the dust settles.

Lives will go on, happiness is still out there to be sought. Perhaps the venal, self-serving world of politics, so in need of a good kicking, will change for the better now that it’s had a fright. And if fewer people abstain from voting in the future, it will be no bad thing.
