Year by year, the stigma associated with mental illness is being diminished, which is just as it should be. If someone has something wrong with their arm, or a condition like arthritis, does society shame them into silence and secrecy? No. So why is it that with ailments of the mind, it’s so often deemed necessary to cloak them in hushed wordlessness? It’s 2017 and everyone should be able to experience the benefits of openness and of knowing they won’t be judged for speaking out. Just as people are increasingly upfront about their enjoyment of gay massage, so they should be able to speak freely about their feelings and their emotional health.
One of the first things we think of when the topic of mental illness rears its head is, of course, depression. It’s perhaps the most prevalent of all the mental illnesses. Depression comes in a variety of guises (clinical depression, mild depression, manic depression, bi-polar, cyclothymia and more) and it can be a short-lived reaction to an event or a long-term condition with no obvious cause. At its worst, it’s utterly debilitating, with sufferers seeing nothing but tired bleakness ahead of them. Fortunately, treatments are many and include anti-depressant medicines as well as non-chemical measures such as talking therapies or even gay massage.
At the moment, the outlook for sufferers is mixed. There’s the good news, which is that public figures, including Prince Harry and Lady Gaga, are talking openly about mental illness (including their own experiences), which is doing wonders for diminishing the shame and the sense of aloneness that sufferers go through. Then there’s the bad news, which is that mental health is a chronically under-funded and scantly-staffed section of the NHS. However, if you see your GP and are persistent, help is out there. There’s also the wonderful work of charities like MIND – another avenue to go down if you’re not successful via your GP. And don’t forget that complementary therapies like gay massage can play a vital role in keeping you in good shape emotionally. Relaxation is key; it allows you to create a firm foundation from which the rest of your life can grow and flourish.
It’s not always easy to know just how well you are. The terms relating to mental illness – from depression to borderline personality disorder and OCD are merely descriptive because there is no blood test that can prove unequivocally whether or not you have a mental illness. However, if you’re experiencing an emotional state in an unusually prolonged manner – if, for example, a sense of sadness is running through everything you do, every day – then it could well be time to talk. You’ll find a listening ear then next time you go for gay massage, but it will also be a very good move to talk to a medical professional, too.
