Do you ever grapple with sartorial decisions, worried about rules, feeling unprepared or uncertain of how to proceed? It’s easy to trip yourself up if you’re unsure of what a particular rule is and whether or not it’s one of the breakable ones. Some rules, for example, such as not wearing a black belt with brown shoes, are crying out to be broken. Only the insecure need adhere to them. But others should remain sacrosanct. One of the latter is to do with black tie, sometimes referred to as dinner jacket and, in America, the tuxedo. There’s a maxim, coined by an unknown wit, which states that a man’s attractiveness is increased by approximately 35 % when he dons this most flattering of formal attire. However, that attractiveness can be drastically reduced when the same man makes the mistake of wearing a shirt with a wing (or winged) collar instead of a plainer, turn-down collar. We’ll come to some of the reasons why in the next paragraph, but for now, it’s worth pointing out that if you’ve got a formal party of some kind occurring in the next few weeks, it’s a great idea to preface it by booking gay massage London, thereby ensuring that you’re in as relaxed a state as possible prior to the event.
So why is it exactly that a wing collar is such a howling mistake when paired with black tie? Well, for a start, wing collars are meant for white tie events (white tie being shorthand for the outfit that comes with a black tail-coat). However, there are other underlying reasons. One of the great things about black tie is that it’s a leveller. The theory goes that once all the men are wearing it, everyone is the same and social boundaries dissolve. Consequently, if one man decides that he will break with tradition and wear a wing collar, he is consciously spoiling this levelling effect by saying, ‘Look at me! I’m better than the other men! Notice me! I stand out!’ Put like that, it’s easy to see why it’s rather horrible and obnoxious. Not to mention unnecessary. It smacks of preening and showing off. There are plenty of more acceptable ways to adorn oneself when wearing black tie. You could opt for a cummerbund for example (a particularly good idea if you need to create a slimming effect where your shirt joints your trousers). There are also lots of options for experimenting with the design of the jacket and the shirt – subtle little differences that still conform to the general spirit of black tie. But a wing collar should be jettisoned at every opportunity – it announces self-regard, social insecurity, pushiness and, it must be said, a kind of gameshow-host smarminess.
